METAL ELEMENT

Fall is the time of transitioning from Yang to Yin energy and is marked by its association with the Metal element. Metal energy emphasizes clarity, refinement and maturity, as well as learning and discerning; organization, setting limits and protecting boundaries; and separating what’s necessary from the wasteful.

Imbalances in the Metal element may lead to an over-valuation of material objects, a need to fill the empty space where our internal sense of value should reside. We lose our sense of a higher purpose and get lost in “what could have been.”

ORGANS OF FALL

The Lungs, a celestial conductor of Qi, orchestrates the symphony of respiration and in its association with fall, creates a time of inhalation and exhalation. We take in the pure, crisp air and eliminate that which is not pure. Fall then becomes a time of letting go and making room for what is to come. As the breath flows freely we are revitalized and liberated from the weight of grief.

A conduit of release, the Large Intestine meridian invites surrender, enabling not only the expulsion of physical obstructions but also the unburdening of emotional baggage.

COmmon themes & COMPLAINTS

Frequent/mild respiratory symptoms, dry skin, constipation, loss of sense of higher purpose, over-valuation of material objects, a need to fill the empty space where our internal sense of value should reside, grief/sorrow.

Meridian CHANNELS

The Lung and Large Intestine are paired Yin/Yang channels. Located on the arms, these channels ask us to put down what no longer serves us.

Lung Channel (figure A) – origins are deep in the stomach, descends to the large intestine to ascend to the lung and finally to the first acupuncture point on the channel at superior and lateral aspect of the chest. The channel then descends the antero-lateral aspect of the arm to the radial aspect of the thumb.

Large Intestine Channel (figure B) – begins very close to where the lung channel ends, on the radial aspect of the second finger and runs proximally along the lateral aspect of the arm to the shoulder, along the lateral aspect of the neck across the face where it ends on the lateral aspect of the nose.
