How Much Does Acupuncture Cost? Baltimore Rates in 2026
At Mend, a private one-on-one acupuncture visit costs $150 for your first appointment and $100 for return visits. Community acupuncture is $35 a visit, flat. Most of our patients do not pay those rates at all, because Mend is in network with most major commercial insurance plans in Maryland and bills Medicare for chronic low back pain. If you are paying out of pocket, every one of those rates is eligible for pre-tax FSA and HSA funds.
That is the short answer. The rest of this page walks through what each visit includes, how insurance works at Mend, and how to keep a course of care affordable.
What Acupuncture Costs at Mend
We publish our prices because we think you should know what a visit costs before you book it. Mend has been a Baltimore practice since 2007, and we built it around one idea: acupuncture should be an immediate, accessible healthcare option for real suffering, not a luxury you have to budget for.
What is included
New patient 1:1 acupuncture / 75 min / $150 / Full health history, pulse and tongue diagnosis, physical assessment, and your first treatment
Return 1:1 acupuncture 60 min / $100 / Progress check, updated point prescription, and hands-on adjuncts (cupping, gua sha, moxa) when clinically useful
Community acupuncture / $35 / Brief check-in, focused treatment in a recliner, shared room, come as you are
Massage / 50 or 75 minutes / $100 / $150
Insurance patients pay their plan’s copay, coinsurance, or deductible amount instead of these rates. More on that below.
Your first one-on-one visit
Your first visit runs about an hour. Your licensed acupuncturist reviews your health history, asks about what hurts and what you want to change, looks at your tongue, and takes your pulse at both wrists. Then you get treated. We do not send you home with a plan and no needles. You leave your first visit having started care.
Return visits
Return visits are 30 minutes of focused time with your provider. They check how you responded to the last treatment, adjust the point prescription, and treat. If cupping, gua sha, or moxa would help that day, your provider uses it. We do not bill those as add-ons.
Community acupuncture
Community acupuncture is $35, no sliding scale and no income verification. You sit in a recliner in a quiet shared room, fully clothed, and your acupuncturist treats points on your arms, legs, and head. We offer community acupuncture at our Remington and Quarry Lake (Pikesville) clinics. Our Canton clinic is private rooms only.
Private vs. Community: Which One Should You Book?
Both get results. The difference is privacy, what part of your body needs treatment, and your budget.
Book a private visit if your pain is in your back, hips, or shoulders and your provider needs direct access to those areas, if you want hands-on work like cupping or moxa, or if you are working through something you would rather talk about behind a closed door. Private visits are also what most insurance plans cover.
Book community if you want frequent, low-cost treatment for stress, sleep, headaches, or general upkeep, and you are comfortable in a shared space. Many of our community patients come weekly because $35 makes that possible.
About 8% of patients who start in community acupuncture later try a private visit, usually because they find out their insurance covers it. If you are not sure which is right for you, call us and we will help you choose.
Using Insurance at Mend
This is where Mend is different from most acupuncture clinics in Baltimore. We bill insurance directly. You do not pay cash and chase a superbill.
Commercial insurance
Mend is in network with most major commercial plans in Maryland. Coverage for acupuncture varies a lot by plan, so before your first visit we verify your benefits and tell you what you will owe: a copay, a percentage coinsurance, or the full visit rate if you have not met your deductible. No surprises at checkout.
A few things we cannot do, because insurance is regulated: we cannot waive or reduce your copay, and we cannot bill insurance for community acupuncture or massage that your plan does not cover.
Medicare
Medicare Part B covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain (pain lasting 12 weeks or longer with no identifiable systemic cause), up to 12 visits in 90 days and up to 20 visits a year if you are improving. Mend bills Medicare for this directly. Most Medicare patients owe 20% coinsurance per visit. We also work with many Medicare Advantage plans. Our front desk can tell you which applies to your card.
We are not able to bill Maryland Medicaid, because Maryland Medicaid does not cover acupuncture for adults.
Veterans
Mend is a VA Community Care provider. If you are a veteran with a referral, acupuncture and massage can be covered at no cost to you.
Workers’ comp and auto claims
We accept workers’ compensation and PIP claims when the adjuster has approved treatment. If a claim is not yet approved, we will ask you to pay the visit rate and we will give you documentation to submit.
Paying Out of Pocket Without Overpaying
If you do not have coverage, or your plan excludes acupuncture, here is how our patients keep a course of care affordable.
WellPass. Five private visits (new or return acupuncture, or 50-minute massage) for $425. That is $85 a visit instead of $100, and it works out to a 15% savings on return visits. WellPass packages do expire, but if yours lapses, ask the front desk. We routinely extend them.
Treatment of the Season. Each season we offer 20% off a seasonal acupuncture session in either private or community care. Right now it is Autumn Alignment.
Profession discounts. We run monthly discounts for educators, first responders, healthcare workers, social services and community workers, caregivers, creatives, and more. Check our deals page for the current list.
FSA and HSA. The IRS treats acupuncture as a qualified medical expense under Section 213(d). You can swipe your FSA or HSA card at our front desk like any debit card, and we will give you an itemized receipt if your plan administrator asks for one. Depending on your tax bracket, paying with pre-tax dollars effectively takes 20 to 35% off the visit. If you are picking benefits during fall open enrollment, this is worth planning for.
Why One Visit Is Rarely Enough
A single treatment will usually help you feel better that day. Chronic pain, though, is built over years, and it takes a series of visits to unwind. Acupuncture works cumulatively. Each treatment builds on the last.
For most chronic conditions, we recommend a block of four to six weekly visits to start, then tapering as you improve. Since 2017 the American College of Physicians has listed acupuncture as a first-line, non-drug treatment for low back pain. Our data backs this up: about 70% of patients who start private care with us come back for more, and the ones who stick with a course of treatment are the ones who tell us it changed something.
If you are on insurance, a weekly course is often just a copay a week. If you are out of pocket, a WellPass covers the first five.
What to Look for in Any Acupuncture Clinic
Whether you choose Mend or someone else, a few things should be true.
-
Licensure. Your acupuncturist should hold an active Maryland license (L.Ac.), which requires a graduate degree in East Asian medicine and national board certification. Every provider at Mend does. Licensed acupuncture is not the same as a weekend dry needling course.
-
Clean Needle Technique. Sterile, single-use needles opened in front of you and disposed of in a sharps container, every time.
-
Published pricing. You should not have to call to find out what a visit costs. Ours is on this page.
-
No pressure. No prepaid multi-thousand-dollar plans, no financing pitch before your first needle. We sell five-packs because five visits is a reasonable commitment, not because we want you locked in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a first visit cost more than a return visit? Your first visit is about an hour and includes a full health history, pulse and tongue diagnosis, and physical assessment before treatment. Return visits are 30 minutes and go straight to checking progress and treating.
Does Mend take my insurance? Probably. We are in network with most major commercial plans in Maryland, bill Medicare for chronic low back pain, and are a VA Community Care provider. Use our online benefits check or call us and we will verify before you book.
Can I use my FSA or HSA card? Yes, for private acupuncture, community acupuncture, and massage. Swipe it at checkout and ask for an itemized receipt if your plan requires one.
Why is community acupuncture so much cheaper? One acupuncturist treats several people in a shared room, so the cost of the room and the provider’s time is spread across more patients. Community care uses points on the arms, legs, and head, which is effective for a lot of conditions without needing a private room.
Do you bill Medicaid? No. Maryland Medicaid does not cover acupuncture for adults, so we are not able to bill it.
What if my insurance denies a claim? It happens, and we handle it. Our billing team appeals denials on your behalf and will not bill you for a visit we are still contesting with your insurer.
