Over the next month all of those in Phase 2 will be eligible for vaccination and as of April 27th, Maryland will enter Phase 3 which means all people over the age of 16 are eligible for vaccination. Check out the Maryland's Vaccine webpage to pre-register at a mass vaccination site or to find [...]

Winter is commonly known as a time to slow down, rest, and restore. At a young age we learn about animals that hibernate during this season. And each year we watch the flora and fauna diminish to just their bare essentials. These are our cues, to tuck in and rest, as we too are part of the natural order of things.  Often, this time of year can be challenging. There’s an inner knowing of slowing down contrasted by the frenzy that occurs during these darker days. Starting with Thanksgiving, we have a slew of holidays and subsequent gatherings that [...]

In fact, during times of “brooding,” stress or anxiety, it’s been shown that taking a tree-lined walk changes blood flow in the brain to improve and enhance mood. However, [...]

How to Fall in Line with Fall (when nothing else is falling in line)

One week into Fall and the cues are all around us. Color-tinged leaves, rustling in the wind. Light dimming a bit more each day. That seasonal softening, reminding us to switch gears and get cozy. Yet in the clinic, we’re noticing a collective resistance to the usual slowing down. What’s happening? These days, there’s plenty to worry about. Yet here we are, in Traditional Chinese Medicine’s season of Worry. In TCM, it's commonly understood that as natural beings, we're affected by our natural environment including the season we're in. As we sit squarely in Late Summer (late July to mid-September), we recognize the season’s impact not only on our body but on our emotions, as well.  Pay close attention to Worry this season. This can look like over-thinking or focusing too much on a particular topic, as well as self-doubt, insecurity, confusion, projection of responsibility and blame, insomnia,  martyrdom, resentment, frustration, and [...]

Gryph & IvyRose's pediatrician Stephen Cowan, MD offers this important Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective of mobilizing without fear in the time of coronavirus. There’s something missing from the information the CDC is offering right now that is more critical to our personal health than all the statistics. During my many years of primary care practice whenever flu came through town, I would call those newly diagnosed every day to see how they were doing.  This served two purposes. It let them know that I was caring for them and this helped them feel less alone, AND it also helped [...]
