By |2022-11-15T14:05:35-05:00August 9th, 2021|Categories: Nutrition, Seasonal Changes, Wellness|Tags: , , |

The quality of the bright summer light is just starting to change from pale yellow to a richer, creamier yellow; the evening light is waning a little sooner; the robin’s last brood of the season has hatched. We’re entering the fifth and shortest season of the year called Late Summer in Five Element theory. It’s a time of transition from yang to yin, a phase between the expansive growth of summer and the inward pull toward autumn. This season correlates to Earth which serves to both feed us and ground us. According to Dr. Elliott Haas, “In the Chinese [...]

Xiao Yao San or Free and Easy Wanderer or Rambling Powder is one of the most commonly prescribed and well-researched Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulas. Several of Mend’s blogs have addressed the importance of loving on your Liver either by eating sour and/or green foods or by tending to your emotional health. Consider Xiao Yao San as another tool to support the Liver. There's a good reason we recommend this beautifully balanced formula at Mend so frequently; it soothes the Liver and supports the Spleen. You may be asking “what in the world does soothing the Liver and [...]

Before, During & After Your COVID19 vaccine

By |2022-11-15T14:06:04-05:00March 22nd, 2021|Categories: coronavirus, Self-Care, Wellness|Tags: , , , |

Until recently, vaccination rollout has been a little confusing. Thankfully, Maryland has seemed to find its distribution footing as more vaccines have become more available across the country. To date, Maryland has vaccinated over 2 million people and continues to vaccinate over 43,000 people per day. Over the next month all of those in Phase 2 will be eligible for vaccination and as of April 27th, Maryland will enter Phase 3 which means all people over the age of 16 are eligible for vaccination. Check out the Maryland's Vaccine webpage to pre-register at a mass vaccination site or to find [...]

Dear Gallbladder

By |2022-11-15T14:06:40-05:00September 9th, 2020|Categories: coronavirus, Mood, Organ, Self-Care, Wellness|Tags: , , , , , |

Dear Gallbladder,  I know you’re having a hard time. I’ve been putting you through the ringer lately.  You see, it’s 2020 and this year has been fraught with uncertainty. It’s requiring daily decision making to happen while also feeling courageous or fearful! It’s challenging us to take action or to risk being complacent.  The stakes of these decisions have never felt more important. As if that wasn’t enough, I’ve been examining patterns of old behavior with the lens of racial inequality AND am marinating in all of the unknowns of this pandemic, not to mention the future of our [...]

Shifting into Fall Foods: Nourish, Preserve and Defend

By |2023-10-05T16:08:04-04:00November 14th, 2019|Categories: Nutrition, Seasonal Changes, Self-Care, Wellness|Tags: , , |

When temperatures start dropping outside, it’s time to start making food choices to support our bodies on the inside. Gone is the time of Summer's warm yang internal energy which helps us to digest cold, raw foods. Eating for the fall requires that our food be cooked so as to put less of a strain on our digestive system which ultimately conserves our body's energy for protection against illness, which we're more susceptible to in Fall. Nourish, preserve and defend with food! Fall corresponds to the Metal element in Five Element theory and is associated with the Lung system. The [...]

Addressing Needle Fears

By |2022-11-15T14:08:39-05:00May 3rd, 2017|Categories: FAQ|Tags: , |

On the topic of "Does it Hurt?" You know when you were little and played with a safety pin or sewing needle for that thrill of danger? Sliding it just barely under the skin to see what would happen, it doesn’t hurt, but still has that sense of potential pain. I’ve been thinking of scenarios to compare acupuncture needles with. It certainly doesn’t feel like getting a shot, but at the same time, yes, you do feel it. If you are dealing with needle fears or just feel uncomfortable at the thought of getting a bunch of needles stuck into [...]

I didn’t have anxiety, anxiety had me

By , |2022-11-15T14:08:40-05:00September 6th, 2016|Categories: Mood, Wellness|Tags: , |

Co-written by local food blogger and writer Gwen Van Velsor and Sarah O'Leary, L.Ac. & Kim Hennessee, L.Ac. Rolling up my mat at the end of a very sweaty Bikram yoga session, my heart still beating fast, I couldn’t catch my breath. From the moment I’d offered the instructor a hurried “namaste,” my brain had hit full tilt-a-whirl with all the tasks for the day ahead, all the tasks I’d failed to do yesterday, and the current drama that was my love life. It didn’t help that I hadn’t slept soundly in weeks, fueled my caffeine addiction like a fiend and [...]

How Does Acupuncture Work? (The Left Brain Version)

By |2022-11-15T14:08:41-05:00April 5th, 2016|Categories: FAQ, Research|Tags: , , |

We acupuncturists hear this question all the time, ‘How does acupuncture work exactly?’ Good question. Acupuncture is a retrospective science which has been going on for thousands of years and only recently has there been a push to understand the science of how and why it works. We can enjoy the benefits of this tradition of care AND also use our current research methods to begin to understand why it works.  Below are a few examples of the progress being made in research.   Gate Control Theory.  First outlined by Melzack and Wall1 in the 1960’s this theory suggests that [...]
