In the past, Mend has always written off patient copay and coinsurance amounts related to additional therapies during acupuncture visits such as gua sha, cupping, moxa, etc. Through agreements with private insurers, we were able to make our services as accessible as possible.

Unfortunately, private insurance compensation began changing in 2022, leading to a 20% reduction in reimbursements.

To recoup this loss, we have been working with insurance negotiators and billing consultants. Despite these efforts, insurers continue to pay below market value, significantly lower than our out-of-pocket rate, despite the substantial administrative burden.

Due to this change, we are no longer able to “write off” fees that your insurance company does not cover. As a result, sessions may now come with a higher fee (~$5-20 above your current rate) for a handful of our patients.

It can be difficult for us to anticipate which plans will be affected. To see what you may be responsible for, you can review previous Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) to see your “Patient Responsibilities.” Any amount beyond your co-pay will be billed monthly (via email and the Jane app).

If the cost of receiving additional modalities, such as heat therapy, cupping, moxa, or gua sha, during your acupuncture treatment creates a financial burden, please let your acupuncturist know before the treatment begins so we can form your treatment plan accordingly.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate the growing complexities and challenges of billing insurance on our patient’s behalf.
