The following take home remedies are some of the most effective options for prevention of viral infections. And when prevention is not possible, potent formulations can help shorten virus duration and severity. Thanks to our go-to local Naturopathic expert, Dr. Emily Telfair of HeartSpace and to our own Chinese Medicine team for bringing these evidence-based remedies to the forefront in a key time to stock up and stimulate immune function.

Please note: Flu and the recent COVID-19 virus both have the potential to be mild and quick or to become more serious and lead to further complications such as pneumonia. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate medical care, including conventional approaches, is essential.

PREVENTION

Vitamin D3 (by V1tal Nutrients):  Boosting your levels after a winter with less sun exposure can improve not only your mood but also your immune response, as low blood levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk of infection. The best ways to increase Vitamin D are to take a sunny vacation or supplement directly with Vitamin D3. (Note to vegans: most Vitamin D supplements are lanolin derived but vegan sourcing is available). (PMID: 21527855)

Vitamin C (daily packets): This water soluble vitamin acts as a potent antioxidant and can strengthen our immune response even before we know we have been exposed to a viral or bacterial infection. Food sources include citrus fruits, red peppers, broccoli, rose hips, spinach and kale. Be aware that increased vitamin C can loosen the bowels so adjust your dosing accordingly.

Astragalus (Immune+ formula): Known in Chinese medicine to strengthen the wei qi or protective energy that wards off infection, this herb is a wonderful support for those individuals who are vulnerable to getting sick or catch colds easily. This herb is recommended for prevention but not to be used during an active infection.

TREATMENT

Wellness Resistance: This formula (containing Yin Qiao, Echinacea, and other effective anti-virals) works best when used at the very beginning of a cold or flu virus and is less effective once the infection has set in for some time. If you notice a tingle on your tongue after drinking the tea or taking it as a tincture, that is a sign that you’ve ingested a good preparation of the herb (specifically echinacea should have this effect).

V-Clear / Umcka:  This dilution of the Pelargonium plant (from the gernanium family) has shown efficacy in reducing symptoms from the cold virus and is generally used to support those with acute respiratory infections including bronchitis. Most preparations are easy to take and have instructions for both children and adults in regards to dosing.  (PMID: 2911983)
